Lake Turkana National Parks: Overview
Lake Turkana National Parks is a combination of 3 national parks in northern deserts of Kenya. The parks are South Island National Park, Central Island National Park and Sibiloi National Park. The lake that dominates the ecosystem is the world's largest desert lake and one of Africa's largest inland lakes. In 1997, the parks were inscribed by UNESCO into the famous UNESCO World Heritage List. UNESCO considers it the most saline African lake hence a great laboratory for plant and animal study.
Wildlife and Birds
Lake Turkana has the world's largest population of crocodiles. The parks are popular as a breeding point for crocodiles, snakes and hippopotamuses. At the heart of Sibiloi National Park is Koobi Fora, the site where Australopithecus fossils and other non humanoid fossils were recently discovered. The park is therefore sometimes referred to as "Cradle of Mankind" for its contribution to evolution. The parks are also an important stopping site for millions of migratory birds.
