Wildlife and Birds at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia

With more than 10,000 large mammals, Ol Pejeta is a conservancy role model. All the big five are available and often in the open for viewing. However, the most breathtaking sightings are of more than the 80 heads of the endangered black rhino specie as well as dozens of chimpanzees. The white rhino is available too and the differences are striking. It was initially set up as a cattle ranch but changed to a wildlife conservancy after frequent fence destruction by stray elephants. Cattle are still available as a means to maximize the land's biodiversity. The conservancy is therefore an integrated livestock and wildlife area. The birding is a hit or miss but still enjoyable.
