In the Laikipia Plateau, in between the Aberdares and the foothills of Mt. Kenya lies Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Established in 1988, the conservancy is one of the most illustrious tourist destinations in Africa. The conservancy is right along the equator, and elevates 1,826m above the sea level. Ol Pejeta is an inviting destination for enthusiasts of bush camps. Located on the banks of the famous Ewaso Nyiro River, the scenery is peaceful and unique. The conservancy is a private property and has had a series of illustrious owners including the famous Lord Delamere.

With more than 10,000 large mammals, Ol Pejeta is a conservancy role model. All the big five are available and often in the open for viewing. However, the most breathtaking sightings are of more than the 80 heads of the endangered black rhino specie as well as dozens of chimpanzees. The white rhino is available too and the differences are striking. It was initially set up as a cattle ranch but changed to a wildlife conservancy after frequent fence destruction by stray elephants. As already stated, Ol Pejeta sits on a relatively high altitude despite being along the equator. The days are warm and hot, often laced with the clear African sunshine while early mornings and late evenings are remarkably cold. The area experiences two rainy seasons with the peak of the long rains in April and that of the short rains in November.

Like most virgin Kenyan parks, roads within Ol Pejeta are messy during wet seasons. It is therefore advisable to visit the conservancy during the dry season on June to September when the roads are better. It is also during this period that wildlife viewing is most convenient. How To Get to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Laikipia)
Ol Pejeta from Nairobi is about 4 hours by road. There is a final 13 km dirt road leading to the conservancy so you may do well with a strong 4X4, though the road is not bad during dry season. A more efficient means of getting to the conservancy is by using any of the scheduled flights from Nairobi, it takes less than one hour. If you can afford, lias with your tour operator to charter a plane for you. Most operators in the region have amazing deals.
